The Race To Net Zero.
He made his ill-founded comments in 2005. I remember him being on TV constantly in the 1980s and 90s, but he continued to get gigs in 2009, when he was pushing 80. David Bellamy lectures were held at Buckingham Palace in 2013 and 2014, when his denialist views were well known. A real thorn in the side of the establishment then. It is absolutely a failing. Germany (and communist East Germany before it) has been mining this stuff for decades, not as a response to recent events. It is notoriously polluting and inefficient, with a much lower energy density than bituminous coal, meaning you need much more coal to get the same amount of energy. A few companies make a lot of money out of mining it though. Germany was highly exposed by the loss of Russian gas due to the complacency of the previous CDU government and had to take emergency measures. That's not the same as a long-term strategy. Regarding that link, the Daily Sceptic is a conspiracy platform with alleged ties to the fossil fuel industry and that became well known for spreading lies about covid. They are trying to con you. Accurate and transparent information is there if you wish to find it.

The Race To Net Zero.
Yes, fires from lithium ion batteries can be put out, albeit not with water. The danger has likely been overstated by the usual vested interests. All the same, it would be best to avoid lithium, and there are alternatives. He's not taken seriously on this as it's not his area of expertise. I'm a linguist, but I have nothing worthwhile to say about the Japanese language. Why do you value his opinion over those who have dedicated their lives to climate science? What have Germany's failings got to do with any of the above? Whataboutery.

The Race To Net Zero.
The poster used the data for one particularly dark, non-windy day when the data for an entire year was available. How is this not misleading? It's like claiming that Notts don't score many because Sam Slocombe hasn't scored yet. Coal is imported from abroad. In 2022, the UK became a net exporter of electricity for the first time in 44 years (source: Statista). On top of that, the UK is a very windy country with a very long coastline. We could literally lead the world in wind power, reducing our dependency on dodgy foreign regimes for fossil fuels and giving us cleaner air. It will be cheaper in the long run too! It's worth noting that power bills surged in the first place because we were overly dependent on Russia for gas. The same regime that is already being courted by Donald Trump. If we want to reduce our exposure, we need to become truly energy independent. Here's another reminder that the pages you've been sharing are financed by foreign oil companies that want us to keep paying for their oil! Batteries exist. Look up energy storage systems. Some former coal power stations are being repurposed as giant batteries so we can use excess energy in lean periods. David Bellamy is a botanist. Would you go to a doctor of law if you had a broken leg?

The Race To Net Zero.
You're all conflating two issues here. Firstly, there's climate change. Companies with a vested interest in fossil fuels dedicate a lot of resources to lobbying and attempting to influence public opinion as this helps shore up their business. Net Zero Watch, which has been quoted on this thread, goes to great lengths to hide the sources of its funding, but we do know it has connections to the US oil industry. On the other side you have climate scientists, who have to disclose their funding and publish their findings in full for public scrutiny. Who do you trust to provide you with accurate information that isn't framed in a misleading way? A good example of misleading information is the post by @Robbie showing the power sources for a single November day. We all know why November was chosen and not May or July. That day has been dishonestly cherry-picked to show the lowest possible share of renewables in power generation. Viewed over a whole year, renewable sources contribute over 30% of UK energy. Secondly, there's net zero and how we get there. If we care about energy security (and we should), we need to remember that fossil and nuclear fuels are imported. The UK does not have any significant uranium deposits. Renewables are the only game in town and they need to be planned sensibly. Instead of denying climate change or spreading false claims about renewables put out there by vested interests, we need to be pushing politicians to make sure that the financial burden of this change isn't borne by those who are least able to pay for it - again!

Notts, the second worse club in EFL2 ... discuss
I've just looked at their website. They look at clubs' financial statements, meaning that they refer to the 22/23 season at the latest. Financial sustainability is a key criterion. The figures refer to our last season in the NL. A lot of our fans like to talk about sustainability, but there was nothing sustainable about how the club was run at that time as we were dependent on receiving a seven-figure sum from the brothers to cover costs. This was done in the form of loans, which will also have seen us marked down. As a sustainability index it might have some merit. None of this means we aren't a well-run club though, and equating the findings to this season for clickbait reasons is pointless. You're not comparing like for like. For example, Morecambe were two divisions higher than us in 22/23, which means they were receiving a lot of extra Football League and TV money. It's a lot easier to cover your costs with that coming in.

1,950 league defeats
As I discovered on the internet today (which we all know is never wrong), we have lost a total of 1,950 league games, which is more than any other club. Barnsley and Grimsby are next on the list with about 30 fewer, albeit from not as many FL seasons. Unfortunately, we've been a bit rubbish for a very long time. Perversely, I feel a bit of pride in this as it means we've A) been around for a very long time and B ) we've been punching above our weight for a fair part of it. What do we do if we hit 2,000 first? Have a party to drown our sorrows?

That's rather smug. In the Germany I live in, over 90% of the fire brigade is manned by volunteers.

Lest We Forget. (Remembrance Sunday)
@Wheelbarrow repair man Our first meeting with Villa after the war was in April 1920, when we were beaten 3-1. But in the return match at Meadow Lane just a week later we beat them 2-1, so Jack Miller was right!

Bye Bye Lineker.
What on earth does this have to do with anything? Some people just have to shoehorn in their agenda wherever they go.

Lest We Forget. (Remembrance Sunday)
This poem was published in a trench newspaper in 1917 and has no doubt been shared here before too. I think it really brings those who experienced this terrible war to life. THE BURNING QUESTION Three Tommies sat in a trench one day, Discussing the war in the usual way, They talked of the mud and they talked of the Hun, Of what was to do and what had been done, They talked about rum, and-tis hard to believe, They even found time to speak about leave, But the point which they argued from post back to pillar, Was whether Notts County could beat Aston villa, The night sped away and zero drew nigh, Equipment made ready all lips getting dry, And watches consulted with each passing minute Till five more to go then twould find them all in it, The word came along the line to get ready! The sergeant admonishing all to keep steady, But out rang a voice getting shriller and shriller, I tell yer Notts County can beat Aston Villa! The earth shook and swayed and the barrage was on As they leapt o'er the top with a rush, and were gone Away into Hun land through mud and though wire Stabbing and dragging themselves though the mire No time to heed those who are following en route Till stopped by a strong point they lay down to shoot, Then through the din came a voice " Say Jack Miller! " "I tell yer Notts County can beat Aston Villa" The strong point has gone, and forward they press Towards their objective in number grown less They reach it at last and prepare to resist The counter-attack, which will come through the mist Of the rain falling steadily, dig and hang on The word for support back to H.Q has gone The air charged with moment grows stiller and stiller--- " Notts County's no earthly against Aston Villa " Two " Blighties ", a struggle through mud to get back To the old A.D.S down a rough duck board track A hasty field dressing a ride in a car A wait in a C.C.S., then there they are Packed side by side in a clean Red Cross train, Happy in hopes to see Blighty again, Still, through the bandages, muffled "Jack Miller, I bet you Notts County can beat Aston Villa! "

Bye Bye Lineker.
While he strikes me as someone who would benefit from stepping away from social media, he's good at his job and will be missed. Curious to see what he does next, although now he's in his 60s he could just be taking a step back. I guessed you're not his greatest fan @Wheelbarrow repair man, but would you mind toning that last comment down? It's a tad aggressive for this board.

Match Discussion: Game 15 - The Rovers (A)
What an amazing team goal! And of course you can't complain at taking a point away at one of the best teams in the league. The fact that none of our substitutes was presumably fit enough to play tells you just how thin we are though, I hope this improves in the weeks to come.

I'm Just Asking. That's All.
For me personally, the song Lanternlight by Nightwish. It's about the people we lose and how they remain with us after they've gone. I find it difficult to listen to, but it resonates so much. On this day in particular, I think of everyone who has experienced war, their fear and loss. I feel it especially when I can imagine myself in their shoes, when I'm standing where they've stood. And last but not least, when I've paid for my groceries at the supermarket and am presented with the bill...

Charity Leeches.
I used to work for a charity many years ago, although I was a looong way short of the salaries named above. For many charities, the idea that you can get enough people to do the work for free is pie in the sky. We were at a very menial level but we provided a service and likely more than paid for ourselves through various promotions. Likewise, a fundraising manager will know exactly where to drum up cash and will make far in excess of their salary. But executives on six-figure sums? Come on.

Trouble Brewing at the PGMOL.
While I can't imagine that Klopp is a referees' favourite, you still have to be careful and professional in your public statements. Anything that indicates that a referee has taken a dislike towards a particular team is a no-no and completely unprofessional.

Welcome back to the PON prediction league. It's the biggest and most beautiful prediction league, everybody says so. And remember your joker. I love jokers. But you can't have more than one joker. You can't sustain yourself like that. And the soccer games start at 3pm on Saturday. Good luck! Cal Roberts.
Great to see he's playing and scoring again after so many injuries! The NLN is far below his level. Unfortunately, his injury record will limit his opportunities to play higher - when you sign a player, you want him to play.

The problems of modern day football
This is a great question and could be a long thread! - Club ownership needs to be tied to a strict set of conditions, a "fit and proper persons test" on acid. No more sportswashing, no more ownership by dodgy foreign states. - Clubs need to be accountable to fans. There needs to be a mechanism that allows supporters to block certain decisions by club owners, such as stadium moves or name changes. - Scrap VAR. - Implement a total ban on betting advertisements in football. - Eject all Milton Keynes-based franchises from the Football League / National League. - Bring back FA Cup replays; sentence whoever suggested scrapping them to a week in Mansfield. - We need to create more opportunities for UK-based players in the Premier League in particular. Maybe a minimum number of players in the matchday squad who have been in the UK from a certain age. - The Premier League and the Football League need to be merged and possibly expanded to include the fifth level. At the minute, the PL is acting in the narrow interests of its 20 members and opening up a yawning gap to the rest of the professional game. This has to end. The wealth has to be shared to keep our game competitive and exciting and healthy in the long term. If this means that PL clubs have to give up their financial advantage over the continent's other top clubs, so be it. - And to do all of the above we need an independent regulator with representatives from the PL/FL, non-league, the government, supporters' groups and the PFA. Otherwise, we'll simply carry on with the status quo.

Barcelona's La Liga home match against Atlético Madrid could take place in Miami
This cannot be allowed, it's a slap in the face for the loyal supporters of both clubs. Just imagine if we do a Bournemouth, we're in the Premier League and then our owners start pushing to play league games halfway across the world...
