  • I’m curious to see how George Abbott gets on without the support he had at Notts. It’ll be interesting to see if he plays the same way for them. His role will be key, because we know he’s a classy player who’s going places. Being loaned to a League One side makes sense, bigger clubs want to test their young players at higher levels before pushing them further. Spurs have done that before with signings from League One and the Championship. I wish Abbott all the best at Wycombe.

Best Of Luck Georgie Boy. After last season down the Lane, I was surprised a Championship Club didn't come in for him. I think he's have done well at Derby. Wycombe have got themselves a Gem and if they back him like the Magpies did, he'll be in for another Good Season, I'll keep an eye out on his progress.

Macca scored the winning goal for Millwall today.

I'm pleased for Macca that he seems to be turning things around for himself at Millwall. It is still true about him, if he gets the right supply he will score goals.

That's three goals for Macca in the last two games. He came on as a substitute today, but if he can keep hitting the back of the net as a super sub it won't belong before he's in the starting eleven.

One thing's for sure, he won't be leaving Millwall while he keeps banging the goals in. If he does, his fee will have gone up for a perspective buyer, that is for sure.

Listen to the Gaffer's reaction after the 1-2 defeat by Salford at ML. He pulls no punches.

Over 6300 season tickets have been sold ahead of the home match against Salford.

  • It’s a bit different for us to try and make the most of the loan market. The club has usually treated it as a way to bring in the odd player who fits a gap. I just hope we can keep players like Tyrese Hall happy. If he does well, he should get minutes, but there’s always the chance he won’t get the time he needs to show what he can do. I can’t say for sure, but Martin Paterson has plenty of options in midfield now.

The young loan signings should offer something different. They must have shown promise to catch the eye of their parent clubs, so we can only hope the loan spells go well.

I don’t mind using this part of the market, as long as every player who comes in is willing to work hard and give solid performances.

Good morning it’s dry at the moment but the forecast is for wet and windy weather later, hopefully the effects of the storm will be minimal in our area. I hope so for our son and family’s sake they are camping at Rutland Water, our daughter in law took part in a swim across the lake yesterday morning, rather her than me I bet it’s cold even in August!

So what’s everyone up to today, anything exciting or anything not exciting, let’s chat.

  • Good afternoon, we’ve had another day of cutting up carpet and underlay ready for our new carpet that coming Tuesday. It’s very tiring work shifting furniture about and getting down on my hands and knees to cut lengths of carpet to take to the tip.

We’d had enough by 3pm and I downloaded my ticket for tomorrow then we relaxed in the garden in the lovely sunshine with a cool drink. Mrs. t’s home made chicken biryani tonight looking forward to that.

@Robbie best wishes to Mrs Robbie I don’t envy her a dentist appointment I’ve had far too many recently.

most days seem to fly by but to day, its just seemed slow and it was one of those days where things were non stop at work. i love my job, i put all of my effort into being the best that i can but i came home today feeling drained. i dont normally feel tired at all after leaving, i can be quite hyper and wanting to do the next thing.

i hope mrs r is okay, i hope it gets fixed and that she has no pain.

Managed to get out for some lovely food last evening with Mrs P and number 2 son. I had Sweet potato, Leek and Cheddar cheese pie (cheese, onion and potato pie really) just poshed it up a little. I haven't had that since I was 10 years old and my Mum used to make it at least once a week and we had it with baked beans, happy days. 😃

reminds me of my own mum, she had certain meals set for every day and it was like clockwork. you never had to think about what you wanted. cheese, onion and potato pie. cottage pie, cheese and beans. all sorts of warm home cooked meals.

    Hope it went OK.

About 3 months ago I took a bite and knew something bad had happened. The pain and sensation went after a day but over the next few weeks, 2 different dentists couldn't find anything wrong, even from x-rays (although the first one offered to yank out my wisdom teeth while he was in there).

I had a different emergency dental problem and holidays which stopped me dealing with this first problem, and lo and behold returning to the second dentist the molar I suspected all along is divided in two all along, you could park a bike there, and is pronounced dead! Now I'm going to have to go down the implant route.

My jaw bone is about to become the recipient of plugs and screws drilled in by power tools.

  • I agree that UEFA is making a big mistake & FIFA is just behind them when it comes to dealing with Russian teams. I can understand the argument that Football Clubs in Russia shouldn't be punished because of the actions of their Government, but to send their Clubs millions of Euros should not be happening. And as @Chris has said, we just don't know that the money will be spent appropriately.

This gets a bit political, but I want to focus on the point that nobody wanted to give anyone connected to Russia money at the beginning of the war's outbreak. Chelsea's owner had silly sanctions, his money withheld, and further pressure to sell Chelsea, from which sale he donated to Ukraine.

However, this is perfectly fine. Why should they even get a handout?

I thought it might be good to start up MAGnet Links topic again for the new season. The idea is every home match we try to think of as many players, managers, coaches etc., past or present that have been involved with both clubs at one time or another.

So come on join in the fun, get your thinking caps on, I’ll start you off with Jorge Grant, he is currently in the Salford squad and played for us on loan from Fo*est during 2017-2018.

Who can think of some more?

  • I thought we looked very well organised and comfortable on the ball for most of the match. The system suits players like Palmer and Jones who can dictate tempo and create chances. We had them pinned back and just couldn’t get the breakthrough early, which always puts you at risk of something daft at the other end, and that’s exactly what happened.

Second half became a bit disjointed but we still kept plugging away. Really liked the impact from Norburn when he came on, added a bit of steel and composure. Penalty was soft but Dennis did well to force it, and Jones made no mistake. Hopefully next week we turn this kind of control into a win.

A few of the differences I will be looking for this season is for the Notts team not to tire as the second half goes on.. Of course they may need to shut up shop on a few occasions as the circumstances demand, but the side did lack goals in the final quarter of most of the matches we played.

I will also be looking for a proactive approach to substitutions. Last season we always saw around the 60 minute mark, several routine substitutions that used to effect the shape, & we also conceded goals just after those substitutions.

I hope that Martin will quickly change things if a particular tactic isn't working, & if that has to include changes, so be it.

I never realised West Allotment was the name of a village!

  • I’ve never heard of the village either. It’s a bit odd seeing a place called West Allotment, especially when an allotment is usually where you go to do a bit of gardening, not play football. I’d get it more if the team was called West Park Celtic FC. That would make a bit more sense.

It rings a bell, but I don’t know why. I wonder if it’s been mentioned here or to me in the past. Thinking a little more, it might have been a quiz where I heard about the village.

Quirky things like this are interesting to read about. Celtic is also a very common name for clubs. At least their badge is unique to them and quite nice for a team within the Scottish football pyramid.

Welcome to the Pride of Nottingham, @Chedozie.

Welcome, and hello @one-two pie. Would you mind telling us a little about yourself? I do hope you enjoy being a part of the Notts community here on PON.

I have a tendency to seek out good TV series, which I often find to be in short supply, but one that’s caught my eye is The Institute.

In some ways, it’s similar to the film The New Mutants, though this is based on a book by Stephen King. It tells the story of a clever 14-year-old whose high intelligence gives him special abilities. Without giving too much away, he ends up in The Institute, a mysterious place where gifted children are taken.

Fans of From might feel right at home, as I believe it’s made by the same team. The intro has that annoying one-tone singing that gets stuck in your head. Robert Joy, who plays Victor’s father in From, also appears in this show, though I don’t think his acting is particularly strong. He doesn’t quite pull off the doctor role convincingly. He just comes across as a bit odd. Imagine Roy Cropper from Corrie as a doctor in Holby City. That’s the kind of strange vibe it gives off. Still, it’s a gripping watch and takes you on an intriguing journey.

The only way to currently watch it in the UK is via Amazon Prime and MGM+.

I would highly wait for Sky to pick it up, as I believe it will be them who will have the broadcasting rights eventually.

I don’t watch much traditional TV, mostly quizzes and game shows. I do keep an eye out for the occasional drama, so I’ll try to remember this one and see where it ends up being shown here. Stephen King is a brilliant writer, and it’s good to see his work finally getting the proper treatment in TV and film.

I have a digi box that is connected to a Digi Aerial. I can connect to ITV X on the internet. There are scores of films, drama series, sport, comedy & general entertainment.

I watched a complete drama series "After the Flood". There is so much to see just on ITV X Television has been revolutionised over the last few years.

  • yeah some supporters were panicking that he would get hold of the club and some took it a lot further, be i am glad ah had the common sense to avoid him. it would have been a disaster if he was involved. a con artist running a professional football club wont be success for the long term.

Imagine if his true identity hadn’t been revealed, it was only thanks to the newspaper article that his fraud and prison sentence was discovered.

This is from when he was in talks about purchasing us, "Alex May, when we were first introduced, disclosed everyone about his conviction. He has changed his name. He came clean and told us and everyone involved in this transaction is aware of that". Just baffling Alan Hardy even accepted the talks with him.

I think the reaction from us fans pretty much put a stop to it, but if that hadn’t all come to light I wonder if he would’ve been able to blag his way through all the EFL checks…

It’s worrying to think he nearly owned Notts, even with the fake name and all the noise he made about having the money. That radio interview where he talked about being part of a group that saw the club as a Championship side, there’s just that sense he would’ve stripped the assets and moved money out. I suppose he might’ve put some of the dodgy cash into Notts to make it look legitimate.

  • its nonsense to complain about it because it just brings awareness to the issue and clubs and players will still want more money. its the way football is, i do agree it will come back as an excuse.

I don’t like it when newly promoted teams complain about how expensive the step up is or say things are overpriced. Compared to what, League Two? It doesn’t make much sense unless they’re trying to set up excuses early. They should stay positive and get on with it. It sounds like they wanted other players but settled for cheaper ones. What would their new signings think? Maybe they should have asked for more wages.

Bradford City can’t really moan about higher fees if they rush into deals. Players want more these days, and it’s often better to wait and let things settle. If you buy anything the moment it’s released, you usually pay more than if you wait a few weeks. Football’s no different, but they’ve got other things they should be focusing on.

After a long, hot summer of transfer rumours and exotic pre-season tours, the proper football is finally about to begin. And with it the prediction league! You are ALL welcome to take part whether you're a newbie or a seasoned campaigner, but be warned: I've decided I'm going to win this time 😉

This is how it works:

At least two days before every matchday I will post a thread with eight matches to predict from the Championship, League One, League Two and the Conference. You then reply with your predicted scores. The cut-off time for posting is kick-off (in this case 3pm). At the end of it all I'll then post a table with the current standings.

Scoring system: 3 points for a correct score and 1 for a correct result. So if you predict Swindon to beat Walsall 2-1 and they do, you get 3 points; if Swindon win 1-0, you get 1 point. Each round you can also choose one match as your joker - any points you win for that match are then doubled.

So let's get on with it, shall we? Here are Saturday's fixtures:

Bradford City v Wycombe Wanderers

Doncaster Rovers v Exeter City

Lincoln City v Reading

Plymouth Argyle v Barnsley

Barnet v Fleetwood Town

Cambridge United v Cheltenham Town

Grimsby Town v Crawley Town

Walsall v Swindon Town

Hello, welcome to the Pride of Nottingham @brad88. Take a little time to familiarise yourself with the site, if you have any questions please do ask. Feel free to introduce yourself.

This seems to be a question a lot of Notts Fans are asking. Go back a year to the Magpie Circle Podcast on You Tube. And the following statement was quoted by C.E.O. Joe Palmer. The Club is Maintainable and Comfortable to get to Championship Level in terms of Finance. In the mean time the Club have sold Macca, Dan Crowley and Alex Bass, they have also received compensation for both Ian Burchanell and Luke Williams. The Notts Model states that any money raised will go straight back into the team. Really? So why do the Owners continue to purchase players on the cheap Free Agents or Loanees? It would seem they are hoping to find another Macca Dan Crowley or Alex Bass and sell them on for a Big Profit.

Selling all your Top Players comes across to Fans as a Lack of Ambition by the Brothers. It would seem they are quite content to use Notts has a feeder club, and if the Magpies get Promoted then all well and Good, but if they Don't it Doesn't Matter. We'll just keep buying cheap players, loaning players and hiring Free Agents, and change the Head Coach from time to time. So where has all the money gone? It seems the answer to that question will be on the Infrastructure, but why spend money on the Paddle Courts, the Nest or a New Pitch? When it would be better to spend money on getting the Magpies promoted and established as a League 1 side, then Invest in things such as the Fan Zone to help boost the Club's Finances. Always relying on doing things on the cheap, will eventually result in things coming back and biting the Brothers in the backside, and lead to Notts being stuck in League 2 or Heaven Forbid Relegated back into the National League.

Notts could invite significant investment through a third party investor by using the investor's capital for player acquisitions, stadium improvements, commercial ventures, while also potentially benefiting from the investor's network & expertise.

This is perhaps too simplistic in the scheme of things, especially when applied to football. Either it means diluting the Bros shareholding or if as a 3rd party loan, what security is asked for in case the Club cannot pay it back.

On 29/07/2025 at 21:48, Ash said:

The club really needs money so it can buy good players and pay off the money it owes. If we keep losing money, that’s not something the club can keep doing.

If we spend money wisely and only pay the right amount for players, I’m fine with signing free players too. They can still help the team.

We can't spend loads of money every season, like £300,000 or £500,000. Some years we have to be more careful.

The club has spent £millions over the last few seasons on off the field projects including laying a SIS Hybrid Premier League Pitch.

I was talking about transfer fees, and I think we’re doing okay.

Some fans think not spending money means we’re not trying hard or it’s a bad thing, but that’s not true. Sometimes saving money is smart.

So rumour is that Jatta's agent wants him out of Notts and in turn gets a nice percentage of that transfer fee.

Pretty straight forward? The real issue is that we have our best striker out of contract next summer. If we turn down offers, likelyhood is he'll go on a free. If he gets us up, he'll likely go someone in the Championship or to a top league somewhere out of the top five leagues in Europe.

If we don't he'll still go somewhere, maybe not as prestigious.

Now we all know that there is that golden figure players can be sold for and in this sense, makes it quite easy to say that if he had two years and starts off bagging like he did at the beginning of last season, we'd be looking at a mil and above. Alas, he's got a year left and can start talking to clubs in Jan, meaning even if we agree to keep him and miss out on the money, his head could be turned in Jan and his form could drop off.

It's probably quite easy to say where we fall as fans, as to say "lets get promoted and deal with him leaving when it happens", but things feel ever so slightly off with finances this summer, so who's to say what their golden figure is and if he's sold, what percentage of that fee gets reinvested into a new striker.

Where does everyone stand?

  • i know the board have dismissed that we are a moneyball club, but that is what it sounded like when they first arrived and there is nothing wrong with it. complaining we are selling players, and denying the club is in better shape or is making any form of progress. it just makes me wonder what those types of fans thought when we were losing players as free agents. players can see its a difficult league and the only way we can get better is through investment.

selling jatta eventually would be a smart move, but a replacement is needed and we need to get him to sign a new deal even if its just two years.

i do worry about him walking away on a free, but i hope his connection to the fans and the opportunity we have given him comes through. his agent might want to make a quick buck, but jatta needs to be the decision maker.

On 03/08/2025 at 22:42, Robbie said:

I agree no player is bigger than the Club.

Don Masson, a Notts County Icon & voted by the fans as our best ever player, was sold to QPR for £100,000 in 1974. Due to inflation that would equate to £1,331,867 now. Every player has his price.

I remember being distraught when “The King” left, I couldn’t elieve they sold him but we survived, I agree no one is bigger than the club.

I was scrolling through a Notts photographer's gallery; he took pictures of the players preparing to go out from under the stands and onto the pitch. Alassana Jatta stood out the most with how friendly he looked; I don't think his agent will turn his head.

If he decides it is his time to move on, I fully believe it will be his decision.

Offering him a new deal, ideally seeing it get signed, should give us some confidence, but at the same time that might just be in the fee we can attract for him. We do have to allow players to leave if it's best for them, and if the money reflects that. All we can hope is that a player can be identified. I was apprehensive about the possibility of losing Kyle Wootton, but we managed to secure the signing of Macaulay Langstaff.

When we signed Wes Thomas, that was a signing that gave me hope that the club could identify goalscorers and bring them to the team. Even prior to Kristian Dennis, Kane Hemmings, and Jon Stead, we hoped that young strikers could be signed. It seems something we are far more capable of doing while avoiding the older legs that are nearing retirement.

Welcome to the Pride of Nottingham, @Stevelatimer. Would you mind telling us a little bit about your background as a supporter?

It's been a busy summer transfer window for Notts. So far eleven players have been recruited, with a promise of more to come before the transfer window closes.

The first league game of the season saw five of those new players included in the starting eleven, & four more came on as a substitute, with another; goalkeeper Griffiths not used.

The Notts match squad looks very different to last season, with Martin Paterson ringing the changes big time.

Of course, with so many changes ,it comes with it, potential problems with player lack of familiarality & team gelling, however the indications from that first game, particularly in the first half, is that it didn't seem to be evident.

One thing is clear, the new players must have impressed the Head Coach to such a degree that most of them have forced themselves into the Matchday squad.

By bringing in all these players, the owners have laid down a statement of intent to give Notts the best chance of success this season. Do PON members agree?

  • I don’t think you can knock the commitment to the cause but I feel like we’ve over-recruited in a way, possibly bringing in unnecessary players (although that is too early to say at the moment). Even though a good number of players departed over the summer some of them formed zero part of the squad. Players like Cameron, Chicksen, Cundy & Morias, they didn’t need replacing they just to needed to be let go.

We have a number of players who can cover more than the one position so I never thought we needed a massive squad either, but right now we’ve got a large squad, 25 outfield players and that’s excluding any academy players... In the midfield positions, which covers the wingbacks, central midfielders and attacking midfielders that’s 6 spots that get filled each match we’ve got 16 players that can play in these positions!

Sometimes you are better off investing the wages of 2 decent players to get 1 very good player, you take the hit of a smaller squad but get quality over quantity. My slight worry is that we have tipped the balance towards quantity.

I don’t think MP had much to do with the recruitment of players that’s the recruitment teams job, MP just works with what he’s given, he may have some input on the type of player but not the individuals.

We may need to be patient while the team gels, you can’t just throw lots of new players into a squad and expect them to work together efficiently quickly, that takes time to learn how each others minds work and anticipate what they will do, I just hope that if things get off to a slow start the fans don’t start to get on their backs.

Quality loans do tend to cost money and good wage contributions, so just because we opted for this doesn't mean we aren't willing to pay. It might be more of a statement that the club believes there are better players to be brought in temporarily while we try to push for a League One return.

The way I think of this season is that the club might be trying to ensure only quality is signed permanently, and those who have arrived on free transfers look to have potential to step up or be allowed to move on without much fuss. League One football isn't going to be easy; a lot of good teams are failing, and the landscape of the division has improved a lot since last year. League Two is more competitive than when we were last here; the issue with football at this level is that some clubs are willing to gamble for promotion.

Accrington's chairman, for example, loved to comment about how his "punching above its weight" team earned promotion. It's been downhill since, and for a club to have such a wonderful season that earned them promotion, I think intent and questioning Notts should not be made so lightly. I know Accrington have a small budget, but their chairman's complaints about fair play, whilst ruining the progress made over one magic season, sort of baffle me as to why he is liked so much.

A striker was on our wish list even after Matthew Dennis; all it takes is one injury, and Mai Traore isn't going to fill me with confidence up top. I think, from what I have seen of him, he's best behind the ball and allowed to run with it.

We only have Alassana Jatta who is a true striker; Dennis still makes me believe he should be playing in a similar role to Jodi Jones and Conor Grant.

Junior has been recalled to bolster the Notts attacking options.

  • Jarvis & Whittaker are no better than Martin & Brown who we let go. Cisse has lots of potential & he's worth a place on the bench.

Junior has shown that he can score goals. Traore hasn't really showed much since his arrival.

I would prefer Junior over Traore at this time. He deserves another opportunity.

a lot of ex notts players do tend to end up at yeovil when they are not doing so well, i wish junior morias well, i thought he was unlucky and threated quite badly in terms of him not being given a proper chance. i know some have suggested he might not have trained well, but the club released two videos during his time, where he was chasing everything with a scary amount of pace and we failed to fit him in.
